The gothic buildings of Torun's Old Town, which won the designation of World Heritage Site from UNESCO in 1997, are testament to its centuries-old economic, cultural and intellectual ties with the leading cities of Europe through membership of the Hanseatic League.
Torun is a candidate for the 2016 European Capital of Culture.
The cities significant contribution to scientific and cultural advancement includes the Nicolaus Copernicus University, which educates over 40 thousand students annually and the Planetarium named by W.
